Today I am coming out of the closet. Yes, I am part of a cult. The happiness cult.
Noone really knows how many members this cult has, but they are everywhere. If you are not part of the cult you will probably not recognise them. However, when members meet an instant recognition takes place followed by a knowing smile.
It is the cult of the people who, while walking in the streets, look at the faces of others that cross their path instead of looking down or far ahead.
It's the cult of people who smile for no reason and who, when receiving a smile, respond with an even bigger one.
It is the cult of people who like showing their affection and appreciation.
The cult of people who love giving and receiving compliments.
The cult of people who can stop you on the street to tell you that they like your clothes/style/eyes/smile.
The cult of people who can startle you by saying they adore you and that they are grateful to know you.
And no, it is not because we want something from you.
It is a gift. It is free. All that is necessary is your capacity to receive it.
People from my cult are sometimes met with distrust.
Sometimes people think that we do not mean the kind words we say. Sometimes people think we have ulterior motives for being nice, that our kindness is not genuine. And other times people even think that we would like to have sex with everyone we are being nice to (huh? Calm down please!)
But the thing is, we ARE genuine and we believe that others are genuine too. We receive kindness with appreciation, not distrust or suspicion.
Meeting other members from the cult is always a memorable, warm and touching experience. I've met so many....
Today I had one such encounter. I was in the supermarket, there were few people and a happy song filled the air. I started dancing a bit by moving my feet. One of the employees appears, walks past me and says with a big, kind smile "It's great to see someone dancing happily like that. Stay like this, never change." I smiled back, thanked him and told him that he had a very kind and big smile. He answered "Yes, I am always happy and smiling. Even when things are rough I tell myself it's OK and I can be happy." "That is a super-power" I answered with a big smile (of course). He smiled back, wished me a nice day and moved on with his job.
That is when I realised: we are members of the same cult.
The happiness/ "spread the love" cult.
Universe: thank you! :-)
